For the Cream Sauce
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 cup heavy cream
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
-
In a small bowl combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 3–4 minutes to soften.
-
In a large bowl mix ground beef, ground pork, grated onion, egg, soaked breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, allspice, nutmeg, and parsley until just combined.
-
Roll the mixture into small meatballs about 1 tablespoon each.
-
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
-
Add meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove from pan and set aside.
-
In the same skillet melt 3 tablespoons butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
-
Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth.
-
Add heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Stir until the sauce thickens.
-
Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer for about 10 minutes until cooked through.
-
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
Notes
For the best flavor use a mix of ground beef and pork.
Do not overmix the meatball mixture or the meatballs may become tough.
If the sauce becomes too thick add a little extra beef broth or cream.
Fresh parsley adds brightness and balances the richness of the cream sauce.
Traditional Swedish meatballs are often served with lingonberry jam.
