  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meatballs

1 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 small onion, finely grated
1 egg
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
2 tbsp butter (for frying)
1 tbsp olive oil

For the Cream Sauce

3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 cup heavy cream
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 3–4 minutes to soften.

  2. In a large bowl mix ground beef, ground pork, grated onion, egg, soaked breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, allspice, nutmeg, and parsley until just combined.

  3. Roll the mixture into small meatballs about 1 tablespoon each.

  4. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  5. Add meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove from pan and set aside.

  6. In the same skillet melt 3 tablespoons butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.

  7. Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth.

  8. Add heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Stir until the sauce thickens.

  9. Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer for about 10 minutes until cooked through.

  10. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

Notes

For the best flavor use a mix of ground beef and pork.
Do not overmix the meatball mixture or the meatballs may become tough.
If the sauce becomes too thick add a little extra beef broth or cream.
Fresh parsley adds brightness and balances the richness of the cream sauce.
Traditional Swedish meatballs are often served with lingonberry jam.
